Funicular Montecatini Terme Tuscany

funicolare

Aboard the historic Montecatini Funicular, you will enjoy a scenic journey up to Montecatini Alto. The journey itself becomes part of the experience: as you climb higher, Montecatini Terme gradually unfolds below you while the landscape of the Valdinievole Valley opens up before your eyes.

Once you reach the top, take a moment to stop and look around.

Before you, you will discover a different Tuscany — far from the most famous postcard views.

Rolling hills, bell towers, small towns and ancient medieval villages stretch across the Valdinievole Valley, creating a landscape that looks as if it were painted on a canvas.

It is the perfect moment to take an unforgettable photograph, but above all, to pause for a few minutes and simply enjoy the view.

LEONARDO DA VINCI

Leonardo da Vinci was well acquainted with the area around Montecatini Terme, then known as “Montecatino” as also evidenced by his depictions of the area, now preserved in the Royal Collection at Windsor.

From the viewpoint of Montecatini Alto, you can admire the very valley that, according to one of the most widely supported historical-artistic interpretations, may be depicted in the famous “Landscape with River,” the drawing created by Leonardo in 1473 and now preserved at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

The drawing, considered one of the most important landscapes in art history, has been linked by several scholars to the Valdinievole Valley, particularly the area around Montevettolini.

Rolling hills, medieval villages, bell towers and the landscape of the Valdinievole Valley unfold before your eyes: a Tuscany that looks as though it has stepped out of a Leonardo drawing.
